The Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC) launched its first strategic venture abroad, a fertilizer factory, on Sunday in Indonesia.

Located in Gersik City, East Java province, the venture is based on a 50-50 partnership with companies owned by the Indonesian government.

The plant, Petro Jordan Abadi, indicates the Company’s intention to give an added value up to 80% to Jordanian phosphate and 20% as crude phosphate.

The plant is expected to annually produce 200,000 tons of phosphoric acid, 550,000 tons of gypsum, and 550,000 tons of pure gypsum to be used in different industries, JPMC Chairman Amer Majali said, adding that "producing phosphoric acid and gypsum from the company's factory in Indonesia ensures a stable and permanent ground for a successful partnership between the two sides."

During the ceremony, Majali signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with representatives of several Indonesian companies to set up a third plant worth of $300 million upon implementation, while consuming 800,000 tons of Jordanian raw phosphate.

He noted that JPMC will soon unveil two deals for establishing plants to produce compound fertilizers after finishing feasibility studies and receiving official government approvals. The first plant will be in an Arab country and the other in an eastern European country.

It is worth noting that Jordan's exports to Indonesia reached JOD 115 million in 2013 while imports from Indonesia amounted to JOD 48 million.
