Bahrain records highest inflation rate in GCC in H1
Inflation rates across Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states ranged between 1.21 percent and 3.10 percent in the first half of 2014, according to the Statistical Centre for the Cooperation Council for the Arab Countries of the Gulf (GCC-Stat).
The latest figures revealed that Bahrain topped the list among GCC countries, recording an inflation rate of 3.10 percent over the six-month period, according to Arabian Business.
Kuwait posted the second highest inflation in H1 of 2.87 percent, followed by 2.80 percent in Qatar, 2.70 percent in Saudi Arabia, 2.21 percent in the UAE and 1.21 percent in Oman.
The GCC-Stat figures revealed price increases across several different recording categories. In Oman, furniture, household goods and routine household maintenance increased by 7.36 percent, while in Qatar and Bahrain, costs for housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels increased by 7.40 percent and 5.60 percent respectively.
Tobacco prices increased by 6.82 percent and 6.70 percent in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia respectively, while goods and services costs increased in the UAE by 5.17 percent.
The figures also showed a reduction in costs in some categories across the GCC states. In Bahrain, costs for communication showed a 0.10 percent decrease, while the transportation costs in Saudi Arabia and Oman fell by 0.20 percent and 0.95 percent respectively.
Health costs in the UAE and Kuwait decreased by 0.01 percent and 1.26 percent rerspectively while prices for food, beverages and tobacco decreased in Qatar by 0.60 percent.
