UAE, Saudi, Qatar top Arab importers from Wales
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit will be held in Wales, the UK, on September 4 and 5. It will be the first NATO Summit held in the UK since 1990.

Dubai-based Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional manager for the Welsh government Lee Jennings said that 2014 is the 10-year anniversary for the Welsh government’s opening of its Dubai office, which covers the MENA region, and which has helped more than 600 Welsh firms develop their operations in the region, particularly in the UAE.

Jennings told Germany’s Press Agency DPA that the Welsh government’s operations in the region include supporting missions, trade exhibitions, visits by official personnel as well as holding educational and cultural events.

From an economic perspective, the UAE is considered the third largest export market for Welsh products, which exceeded GBP 1.1 billion in 2013, compared to GBP 600 million in 2012. The export surge is attributed to the UAE increasing imports of machinery and energy-generating equipment by 90%.

Qatar is also considered among Wales’ major markets as Welsh products exports to Qatar in 2013 reached GBP 353 million, double the export figures for 2012. Qatar ranked ninth for Welsh product destinations compared to its rank of 16th in 2012.

Saudi Arabia’s imports from Wales hit GBP 291 million last year, compared to GBP 120 million 2012. It ranked 17th for Welsh product destinations, compared to its rank of 21st in 2012.
