With restrictions on the import of incandescent bulbs to the UAE for use in residential areas in place and their sales to be prohibited from December 31, 2014, as per the directives of the Emirates Standardization & Metrology Authority (ESMA), LED lighting solutions in the country are expected to post significant growth.
GE Lighting, the global pioneer in energy-efficient LED lighting, is meeting the projected growth in demand through its full spectrum of lighting solutions and fixtures that will support the UAE’s move to ‘greener lighting’ across residential areas.
The new regulation is expected to result in substantial financial savings of nearly US$200 million per year on energy bills for the nation, and to reduce carbon emissions equivalent to 165,000 cars off the road per year.
George Bou Mitri, GE Lighting’s General Manager for the Middle East, Africa and Turkey, said the move by the UAE to phase out incandescent bulbs reflects the long-term vision of the government to promote sustainable development.
“Electricity for lighting accounts for nearly 20% of global power consumption and close to 6% of worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The shift towards efficient lighting solutions will help reduce emissions by half,” said Bou Mitri.
“Phasing out energy-inefficient lighting is one of the most effective and economical ways to reduce carbon emissions, while strengthening energy use efficiency and protecting the environment. The UAE’s move will thus be a benchmark for the region, which is currently placing the highest emphasis on sustainability initiatives.”
“Over the years, we have combined our luminaire and LED expertise to bring unmatched product quality and reliability. GE Lighting’s LED solutions can save up to 70% in energy consumption, and up to 20% in upgraded conventional lighting sources. Our LED products also last upto 50,000 hours, which all plays a key role in driving environmental sustainability,” explained Bou Mitri.
The implementation of sales restriction by the end of the year is expected to drive GE’s LED lighting sales by double digits. The company is working with its partners on educating about the new decree and also assisting them in managing the inventory. This includes upgrading their lighting products to meet the UAE’s Residential Lighting Regulation based on environmental, safety and efficiency criteria.
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) were invented by GE scientists in the 1960s with benefits including up to 90% energy-cost savings, a long useful life of up to 50,000 hours, minimized maintenance and related costs, excellent low temperature performance, and the absence of mercury or lead and extremely low UV and IR.
