Air Astana seeks UAE growth as Dubai flights resume
Air Astana seeks to enter into connections through Dubai as Kazakhstan diversifies its economy away from oil by bolstering its tourism and trade.

In September this year, the Kazakh airline resumed daily direct flights to the emirate from Almaty following a four-year hiatus, The National reported, adding that the route picks up around 20% of its traffic from connecting flights, which is higher than its global average of about 13% traffic from connecting flights.

The airline seeks to attract tourists from Dubai where, tourism and real estate development from Kazakhstan are in abundance, said Air Astana President Peter Foster, adding “We could possibly look into starting a Dubai-Astana flight and if we do so, it will come before the expo in Astana in 2017”.

Almaty, in the country’s south, is the hub of Kazakh commerce. Astana, in the north, has been the capital since 1997. Based in Almaty, Air Astana flies to 18 countries.

The airline runs an Astana-Abu Dhabi service four times a week and has a code-sharing partnership with Etihad. It was also considering a flight between the city and Dubai.
