Dubai Duty Free nears AED7bn in 2014, sees new expansions
Dubai’s Duty Free Shops is close to achieving sales amounting to AED seven billion by the end of this year, registering a seven percent increase compared to figures from 2014, said Dubai Duty Free President George Horan, adding that the inauguration of Concourse D in the first quarter of 2015 in the duty free area will expand the retail footprint by another 7,000 square metres.

This new concourse will cover some 65,000 square metres, Dubai Duty Free revealed on its official website, adding that the new area will be the home to the 100 airlines that currently operate from Dubai International Airport’s (DIA) Terminal 1, Concourse C.

“Meanwhile, the Dubai Duty Free operation at Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central continues to do well and covers 2,500 square metres. In the long term, the airport has capacity for over 160 million passengers and ultimately, the retail operation will cover some 64,000 square metres,” the website highlighted.

The Irish Village, another expansion of the Dubai Duty Free’s Leisure portfolio, was officially inaugurated by Ireland’s Taoiseach Enda Kenny, TD. It overlooks the lake and the DDF-owned Jumeirah Creekside Hotel. Moreover, it has increased the restaurant’s outdoor capacity by 70%.

Sales in Dubai’s Duty Free are expected to grow alongside increased tourist activity as well as airlines’ expansions, Horan noted, adding that that sales are expected to exceed AED 11 billion ($3 billion) in 2020-2021.
