Egypt’s new government sworn in
Egypt's Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb was sworn in today at the head of the new government. Mehleb, followed by his ministers, took the oath of office in front of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
"We will start our work from the early hours of the morning as there is a strict plan and new technique of work to tie all the ministers to work together and not work as if they were isolated islands," Mehleb was quoted as saying by a local gazette.
Mehleb said ministers will provide him with a weekly plan that he will review at meetings with his cabinet, which he said was chosen after interviews with more than 90 candidates for the various ministerial portfolios.
The new cabinet includes 34 ministers, of whom 14 were newly appointed. Just four of the ministers are women.
The Cabinet spokesman Hossam El-Kawish said on Monday that the new ministers, most of them holdovers from the previous 31-member cabinet, would be sworn in on Tuesday.
The most important change will be the re-creation of an investment ministry separate from that of industry and trade, a move critical to Cairo's chances of enticing back foreign funds to stimulate an economy racked by years of political turmoil. It is not yet known who will head up the investment portfolio.
"The new government includes 10 new ministers and a new ministry," Mehleb told reporters. Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour announced that the new government will include the Ministry of Investment separately from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, according to El-Borsa website.
The minister added that the final composition of Egypt’s new government will likely be announced Tuesday evening.
Abdel Nour had previously stated he accepted assuming the post of Deputy PM for Economic Affairs.
It was reported earlier that Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb is slated to choose from two top candidates for the position of the new Minister of Investment, with the decision to be announced Monday morning, according to a cabinet source.
