122 million cubic meters dug at New Suez Canal
Deputy Head of the Armed Forces' Engineering Authority Kamel el-Wazir said on Thursday that 122 million cubic meters have been dug at the newly-launched Suez Canal project so far, which represents 68% of the plan, according to State Information Service (SIS) portal.
According to the preset schedule, we were supposed to finish only 105 million cubic meters by today, he said.
El-Wazir thanked all workers for their efforts to finish the project as soon as possible.
The new Suez Canal is the flagship project in President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's programme to revive an economy battered by years of political turmoil.
Egypt hopes the new canal will more than double revenues from the waterway by 2023 to $13.5 billion from $5 billion. It also plans to develop 76,000 sq km (29,000 sq miles) in the area into an international industrial and logistics hub to attract more ships and generate income.
