Egypt replaces interior minister in cabinet reshuffle

Egypt replaces interior minister in cabinet reshuffle
former Interior Minister Mohammad Ibrahim

Egypt’s interior minister, Mohamed Ibrahim, has been replaced as part of a cabinet reshuffle that includes changes to eight ministries, the presidency announced on Thursday.

Magdi Abdel-Ghaffar will replace Ibrahim, according to the presidency’s statement. Ibrahim has been subjected to criticism as the government sustains a crackdown on secular and Islamist opponents that has landed thousands in jail.

Other ministries affected by the shuffle include those for agriculture, tourism and telecom portfolios.

The reshuffle comes ahead of Egypt’s anticipated investment summit expected to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh between 13 and 15 March. Egypt has been hoping to attract investors for its cash-deprived economy, hit hard by four years of political unrest since a 2011 popular uprising ousted longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
