Egypt’s former president Mohamed Mursi was sentenced by a criminal court on Tuesday to 20 years in prison for his role in killing protesters during clashes outside the presidential palace in 2012.

The case stems from violence outside Ittihadiya palace in December 2012, where protesters massed to decry a ruling from Mursi that they argued placed him above judicial oversight. According to Tuesday's verdict, Mursi’s supporters attacked the opposition protesters, sparking clashes at that killed at least 10.

A dozen other figures from the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Mursi hails, were also sentenced on Tuesday.

They were acquitted of previous charges of murder.

Mursi’s supporters and Islamist sympathisers have been subject to a prolonged crackdown since he was ousted by the military in June 2013 after mass protests against his one-year rule.
