Oman’s population passes 4 mln mark –data
Oman's population has almost doubled over the past decade and has now finally passed the four million mark, official statistics show.
Times of Oman reported that, the figures from the National Centre for Statistics (NCSI) confirm Oman's rapid growth, considering back in 1970 it had only 654,000 inhabitants, that's more than a 500 per cent rise.
As of 2nd April 2014, the total population of Oman had reached 4,000,345. Citizens constitute 55.8 per cent of the population with 2,232,949 citizens recorded, while expatriates make up the other 44.2 per cent with 1,767,396.
Salim Al Mashani, Taqah member at the Majlis Al Shura, told Times of Oman that an increased population would help in the growth of the national economy but the government has to build more infrastructure projects as well as recreational places.
"The growth in the Omani population ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 per cent which means that there is a significant growth of the expatriates in Oman," he noted.
Comparing the latest figures with those issued end of December 2013, the number of Omanis has increased by 20,256 in the first quarter of 2014, while expatriate numbers increased by 23,049 in the same period.
The figures show that Omani males outnumber Omani females. The total number of Omani males was 1,130,115, while the number of Omani females stood at 1,102,834. For expats, the number of males is higher than females, with 1,448,816 males versus 318,580 females. Dr Sathish Nambiar, chairman, Indian Social Club, said the increase of Omani population bodes well as it will eventually lead to an enhancement of the local workforce.
