BREAKING: El-Sisi sworn in as Egypt's new president
Egypt’s former army chief Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has been sworn in as the President of Egypt at Cairo's Constitutional Court, state media said. El-Sisi takes the oath of office for a four-year term.
The ceremony will be followed by a reception at Cairo's Ittihadiya presidential palace. Field Marshal Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was declared the winner of Egypt’s presidential elections in an overwhelming victory over his leftist rival Hamdeen Sabbahi, securing 96.2% of the vote with most of the ballots counted, although his victory was marred by low turnout at polling stations. At least 21 million voters, or 96.2 % chose the retired field marshal, who deposed the elected Islamist president Mohamed Mursi last July, with the ballots counted from 312 of 352 counting stations, state television reported. El-Sisi's main challenges will be to restore stability and revive the economy after three years of turmoil, following a 2011 uprising that ousted strongman Hosni Mubarak. El-Sisi will be the fifth Egyptian president to rise from the ranks of the military and is expected to reassert the army's grip on politics. Several heads of state are among prominent personalities expected to attend the ceremony, the Reuters news agency reported.
Security forces set up their patrols around the Koba Palace, the inauguration's venue, to ensure that everything went well.
After the ceremony in front of the Supreme Constitutional Court's General Assembly in Cairo, he will get a 21-gun salute followed by the national anthem.
Fireworks erupted as vendors sold Egyptian flags and balloons marked with his face. Military and security personnel watched from the edges as crowds danced and sang.
The United States said it was looking forward to working with El-Sisi "to advance our strategic partnership and the many interests shared by the United States and Egypt," the White House press secretary said in a statement last week.
