Morocco ranks most peaceful in North Africa; following GCC
The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) released the 2014 Global Peace Index (GPI), as Morocco came in the 63rd place out of 162 countries worldwide upon the degree of peace in the country.

Noteworthy, Morocco moved six ranks up against last year, ranking the seventh in the Middle East, following Qatar (22nd), Kuwait (37th), UAE (40th), Jordan (56th), Oman (59th), Turkey (128th), and Lebanon (146th); while Iraq and Syria were in the bottom of the list, due to their ongoing internal conflicts.

Meanwhile, Morocco topped the list of North Africa, coming ahead of Tunisia (79th), Algeria (114th), and Libya (133rd).

The five countries that topped the list globally were Iceland (1st), Denmark (2nd), Austria (3rd), New Zealand (4th), and Switzerland (5th); keeping the same positions as last year.

It should be noted that “The index gauges global peace using three broad themes: the level of safety and security in society; the extent of domestic or international conflict; and the degree of militarization,” according to the GPI report.
