Cairo – Mubasher: Shares of Italian energy group Eni have rocketed on Milano bourse early Monday, adding 2.15% to reach 14.7 euros.

The stock was spurred by the news that Eni discovered a “supergiant” gasfield off the coast of Egypt, the largest ever found in the Mediterranean Sea.

In a report sent from Eni’s head to Minister of Petroleum Sherif Ismail, the Italian group added that the new gasfield includes reserves reaching 30 trillion cubic feet, which qualified the new discovery to be described as the biggest in Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea and may become the biggest worldwide.

The new key natural-gas discovery is a positive result of the oil agreements signed during the last two and a half years, which reached 56 accords at investments not less than $13 billion, said Ismail.

For his part, Eni’s chief executive Claudio Descalzi stressed the strategic partnership with Egypt that has lasted for more than 60 years.

“It’s a very important day for Eni and its people,” Descalzi said in a statement. “Our exploration strategy allows us to persist in the mature areas of countries which we have known for decades and has proved to be winning, reconfirming that Egypt has still great potential.
