Riyadh-Mubasher: GCC power linkage project will likely reach Europe over the next 10 years, said Nasser Al-Shahrani, director of operations at GCC Interconnection Authority.

On the sidelines of the Saudi Water and Electricity Forum held currently, Al-Shahrani told Mubasher that there are long-term expansion plans for power linkage with Europe and East Asia.

He added that there are also medium-term plans for power linkage with the remaining Arab states, noting that talks are progressing with Turkey that will be the gate to Europe.

The GCC power linkage project was carried out in three phases; the first one was launched in 2009 and included Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, Al-Shahrani said, adding that the second phase included the UAE and Oman.

He also said the third phase was launched in 2011, and included the UAE and Oman.
