Abu Dhabi Waste Master Plan 2040 Holds First Steering Committee Meeting

Representing milestones in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi’s Waste Master Plan 2040’s development, the Situational Analysis and the Waste Characterisation study, were discussed at the Waste Master Plan’s first Steering Committee meeting. The Steering Committee is led by Chairman H.E. Khalifa Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary at the Department of Municipal Affairs.

The Committee’s role is to supervise and guide the overall process of developing the Waste Master Plan whilst ensuring its alignment with the overarching initiatives and visions of the government of Abu Dhabi including the UAE Vision 2021 and the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. A significant finding, which was revealed during the meeting, is that the majority of waste in Abu Dhabi is generated by the commercial and industrial, and construction sectors.

Steering Committee Chairman, H.E. Khalifa Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Undersecretary at the Department of Municipal Affairs, said: “In line with the country’s strategic direction towards environmental sustainability, the Waste Master Plan Steering Committee’s role is to ensure the realization of Abu Dhabi’s objective to implement a fully integrated waste management system. The Steering Committee members represent most of Abu Dhabi’s stakeholder entities that will lead the implementation of the strategies set out by the wise leadership. The implementation will be facilitated through a series of meetings to supervise the project’s progress directly and effectively according to the plan and realize its output.”

The Waste Master Plan aims to safeguard Abu Dhabi’s community by protecting the Emirate’s natural resources and environment and contributing to its long-term economic viability. A comprehensive overview of the project was delivered to the Steering Committee that included the remaining deliverables, the current status of the project, and the highlighted findings resulting from these two key waste management deliverables.

H.E. Eissa Saif Al Qubaisi General Manager of Tadweer, said: “The Waste Master Plan team has made significant progress after the first stakeholder workshop, which was held at the end of last year. The plan has reached its second phase as we are about to finalize the Situational Analysis Report and the Waste Characterisation Study. These reports will provide a more thorough understanding of the Emirate’s waste situation. The data available to us now indicates that about one third of the waste in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is generated through commercial and industrial activity, another third is residential waste and the last third is generated through construction and demolition activities.”

H.E. Eissa Saif Al Qubaisi concluded: “The Steering Committee meeting has come up with several valuable recommendations that will be taken into consideration in the coming phases of the project.”
