Mubasher: The Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) has signed trade agreements with Algeria to receive 100 megawatts (MW) of electricity, reported Agence Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP), citing STEG's CEO Amer Bashir as saying.

He revealed that the agreements aim to provide enough power to meet demand during Tunisia's peak consumption season.

Maximum consumption will reach 3,900 MW against 3,594 MW due to rising temperatures, the top executive said at a press conference in the Rades power and gas plant.

Bashir did not rule out the possibility of resorting to voluntary power cuts that last a few minutes to preserve the network, TAP reported, adding that peak forecasts are based on temperatures reaching 40 degrees.

The use of voluntary power cuts is in force in all countries, the CEO said, noting that these cuts will not impact important and sovereign institutions.
