Cairo - Mubasher: The Egyptian ministry of agriculture and land reclamation announced on Saturday that it has decided to resume meat and poultry imports from Brazilian accredited slaughterhouses.

The ministry added in a statement that imports will be under the control and inspection in the country of origin, as well as in the Egyptian ports.

Such measurements shall help limit the risk of any food products not fit for human consumption to enter the country, the ministry explained.

The ministry’s official spokesperson Hamed Abdel Dayem told Mubasher on Thursday that the ministry has decided to postpone meat imports from Brazil until it confirms the products’ validity for human consumption.

Meats imports will not be halted permanently, but will be postponed until further notice, said Abdel Dayem then.

The decision did not include shipments which left Brazilian ports on their way to Egypt, which the spokesperson assured that they will be subject to careful inspection to ensure their wholesomeness.

Brazilian police recently accused more than 100 people, most of them health inspectors, of receiving bribes to allow the sale of rotten products, or to skip inspection of packing and packaging facilities and forging export documents.

A number of countries, including China, Saudi Arabia, and others, stopped importing Brazilian meat after police investigations in Brazil.
