Tunisia to supply Europe with power by 2018
TuNur, a new project in the Tunisian Sahara, aims at generating clean solar energy to power two million European homes by 2018, reported News24.

The power supply will be transmitted to the Tunisian coast via an undersea cable that is connected to the European grid via a hub in northern Italy.

Moreover, water or molten salt will be heated to over 500°C by using a very large array of mirrors to reflect the Saharan sun to a central tower.

Meanwhile, more than EUR 10 million were spent to locate the suitable spot in the Sahara to harness solar radiation.

Renewable investment company Low Carbon and solar developer Nur Energie noted that the project will produce energy twice as much as the average nuclear power plant, while TuNur added that energy could even be generated when the sun goes down.
