Osmoflo awarded Barka EPC water contract
Australian desalination company Osmoflo has bagged the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the upcoming 12.5 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) seawater reverse osmosis (RO) plant in Barka, according to Times of Oman.

Osmoflo was awarded the contract from ACWA Power Barka, which recently won phase two of the Barka desalination project by Oman Power and Water Procurement Co (OPWP).

The plant is expected to deliver 12.5 MIGD or 56,775 m3 of water per day, the statement highlighted, adding that it is a continuation of the phase-two expansion of ACWA Power’s operations in Barka, where it already manages a plant delivering 136,660 m3 of water per day and 427MW of power.

“The Barka project is an important project for us as it demonstrates the international capabilities of Osmoflo, it reinforces our ongoing commitment to international growth by servicing the global market,” Osmoflo Managing Director Marc Fabig said in a statement on the company website.

He added that the system will be delivered in three phases, the first of which is scheduled to begin in August 2015.

The plant will meet the growing water needs in the city of Muscat and surrounding areas, Times of Oman reported, highlighting that water demand in the north of the sultanate is expected to record a rise by six percent annually to 349 million m3 in 2020 compared to 238 million m3 in 2013.

Operating under a power and water purchase agreement (PWPA) with OPWP, the Barka I power and desalination plant is owned by ACWA Power Barka.
