Singapore's consortium awarded $250m Omani project
State-owned Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has awarded Singapore's consortium comprising Hyflux Ltd and National Power and Water Co a major contract to develop a seawater desalination project in Qurayyat, Oman.

The $250 million independent water project is going to be a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant with a designed capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day (44 MIGD) of potable water, reported Times of Oman.

The project is expected to begin commercial operation by May 2017 under a 20-year water purchase agreement with OPWP.

Hyflux will be responsible for turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) – a contract valued at $210 million – as well as operations and maintenance of the plant.

Moreover, OPWP has undertaken the development of this important project to improve availability of water resources in Qurayyat.

Worth highlighting, the project is part of a series of water desalination projects planned by the company to raise the overall capacity of desalinated water in the Sultanate from the current 670,000 square meters per day to 1,300,000 square meters per day by year 2020.
