Muscat securities tumble to 16-year low, break below 5,000 pts

Mubasher: The Muscat Securities Market (MSM) recorded on Sunday the lowest level since April 2009 after breaking below the level of 5,000 points.

The benchmark index lost 3.21% or 164.04 points to 4,948.48 points, and the Sharia Index fell 1.68% to 817.4 points.

The benchmark index closed Thursday at the level of 5,112.52 points after shrinking 1.67% or 86.57 points.

Trading volume jumped by 69% to 21.69 million shares, versus 12.8 million shares on Thursday.

Turnover, however, shot up 75% to OMR 6.26 million, compared to OMR 3.58 million in the previous session.

The market value declined 1.3% to OMR 15.26 billion from OMR 15.45 billion last session.

The financial, services and industrial sectors dropped by 4.17%, 2.74% and 1.71%, respectively.

Ominvest was the only gainer as it finished 0.45% higher, while Renaissance Services was the worst performer through a 10% decrease.
