Doha – Mubasher: Qatar revealed its first completed venue for the FIFA World Cup 2022, namly the Khalifa International Stadium, Arabian Business reported on Friday.

The open air stadium, on which the final match of The Emir Cup already took place, uses a cooling technology, and is hence, air-conditioned.

The building includes about 500 jet nozzles which blast out cold air, keeping the temperature inside at about 23 degrees Celsius, according to Arabian Business. Chilled water is piped to the stadium from a cooling centre about one kilometre away from the stadium, pushing out cold air into the stadium.

"I think it is a source of immense joy and pride," Nasser Al-Khater, a senior figure at the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy of the World Cup, told AFP.

The stadium was built in 1976 and has gone through its second refurbishment process.

With a capacity of 40,000 fans, the stadium will host matches played up to the quarter-final stage and the World Athletics Championships in 2019.

The man responsible for the system, Qatar University's Saud Ghani, said he believed Khalifa represented a world-first.

"There isn't on earth, one open air, air-conditioned stadium," Ghani said.

He stated that the system would use up to 40% less energy than other cooling methods.
