Egyptian tourism up 49% in April - CAPMAS

Cairo - Mubasher: The Egyptian Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said that the number of tourists visiting Egypt increased in March 2017 by 48.6% year-on-year.

Tourists totalled 654,900 in March compared to 440,700 tourists in the same month last year, according to the report issued by CAPMAS on Monday.

Western Europe was in the lead as it accounted for 31.9% of the visiting tourists, of which Germany dominated 43.9%.

The Middle East came in second with 24.6%, of which Saudi Arabia sent 37.6%, followed by Eastern Europe with 21.6%, with Ukraine having the biggest portion of 56.3%, while the rest of the world recorded 21.9%.

In April, Hisham El Demery, the chairman of the Tourism Development Authority, said that Egypt is considering a decision that will grant entry visas to foreign residents in the Arab region and especially the Gulf countries.

The minister of tourism previously expected the sector to recover by the end of the year with the target to attract 10 million visitors.
