Riyadh – Mubasher: The Saudi cost of living index “inflation” shed 0.1% in August 2017, compared to the year-ago period, remaining negative for the eighth consecutive month, the Saudi General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) on Wednesday said.

Month-on-month, the Kingdom’s cost of living index remained unchanged, the GASTAT added.

The Saudi authority attributed the annual drop to the decrease in recreation and culture, food and beverages, transport, and restaurants and hotels sections by 2.8%, 1.8%, 1.6%, and 1.4%, respectively.

The clothing and footwear, furnishings, household equipment, and maintenance, housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels sections tumbled 1%, 1%, and 0.5%, respectively.

On the other hand, tobacco section surged 100.2%, followed by education with 1.8%, communication with 1.6%, and miscellaneous goods and services with 0.2%.

The reason behind the month-on-month stability was the rise of tobacco section by 0.4%, followed by communication with 0.2%, restaurants and hotels with 0.2%, miscellaneous goods and services with 0.1%, and recreation and culture with 0.1%.
