Russia threatens to shut down Twitter
YouTube and Twitter could soon be banned in Russia

Mubasher: The Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology, and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) has asked Twitter to suspend the account of an opposition group called Open Russia.

The media organization has threatened to take twitter offline in the country.

Open Russia, found by business tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, has organized a number of protests against the Russian government, and the government believes that the movement’s presence on social media platforms has encouraged mass riots and extreme activities, acquisitions that the movement denies, as reported by Deutsche Welle (DW).

This comes only three months before the presidential elections, in which President Vladimir Putin will run for a second consecutive term, and a fourth in total.

A similar request by Roskomnadzor has been made to YouTube for the same purpose.
