UK construction activity marks biggest decline in 5 yrs

Mubasher: The UK’s construction output dropped for the sixth consecutive quarter during the three months ended November, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Wednesday.

Production shrunk by 2% in the aforementioned period, which is the largest fall since August 2012, the data showed.

Construction activity was hit by the weakness seen in both all new work, and repair and maintenance, which decreased by 2.1% and 1.7%, respectively. The decline was seen despite a 1.2% growth in new work for private housing.

On a monthly basis, however, output increased by 0.4% in November.

By 11:06 am GMT, the GBP/USD inched up 0.11% to $1.3555, while EUR/GBP jumped 0.48% to 0.8858.
