Dubai – Mubasher: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) on Tuesday signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) to build a 400-megawatt (MW) pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in the Arabian Gulf with a storage capacity of around 2,500 MWs per hour.
The MoA was inked with the GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) and Belgium’s Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering Group (DEME).
“The project builds on DEWA’s success in launching a 250 MWs pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta,” said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, DEWA managing director and CEO.
DEWA seeks to diversify the energy mix and develop energy storage technologies, the Dubai-based authority stated.
“The agreement to study the economic and environmental feasibility of constructing a pumped hydro storage island in the Arabian Gulf supports our efforts to diversify energy sources and enhance storage technologies,” Al Tayer concluded.
