UK government should do more to meet climate targets -CCC

Mubasher: Urgent actions should be taken by the UK government to meet climate targets, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) said on Wednesday.

The committee warned that the UK would not be able to achieve its “vague” ambitions until ministers turn their pledges into solid and applicable plans.

Procedures like banning petrol cars by 2040, planting more trees, and building homes to a higher standard are needed to avoid missing the targets, the CCC said.

Three-fifths of the newly produced cars should be electric by 2030 to meet greenhouse gas targets, the UK ministers said, adding that they are currently reducing emissions at an effective and quick pace.

The government noted that despite these statements, the CCC also saw a major positive change under Theresa May who, last week, launched a 25-year plan to protect the environment.

The committee praised May’s green growth plans and described the UK as a world leader in cutting emissions so far, but rgued that the plan still did not provide enough details to meet legal carbon targets.

“There has been a very fundamental change of stance, but that, of course, doesn’t mean there is not a very great deal more to do. There is a real pressure and urgency,” chair of the CCC Lord Deben said.
