Cairo – Mubasher: The real price of the metro ticket is EGP 30, a top Metro official told Al Tahrir newspaper.

The Egyptian government covers EGP 28 per ticket for passengers, who only pay EGP 2, Ali Fadali, head of the Egyptian Co. for Metro Management & Operation, added, indicating that this unbalanced payment represents a major burden for the government.

In July, Egypt’s transport minister said that metro ticket prices were set to increase based on the number of stations travelled, starting 2018, whereas a spokesperson for the National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) said the ticket price hike would be carried out after the new ticketing gates are installed in the first metro line.

In March, the Ministry of Transport raised metro ticket prices to EGP 2 per ticket from EGP 1.
