London City Airport closed on WWII bomb discovery

Mubasher: The London City Airport closed on Sunday after a World War II (WWII) bomb was discovered nearby the River Thames.

"Following the discovery of a World War II ordnance in King George V Dock as part of planned development works, a 214 metre exclusion zone has been implemented," the airport said in a statement.

"As a result, London City Airport is currently closed," it added.

Construction workers had discovered the bomb on Sunday and alerted authorities.

Located in East London’s Newham Borough, the London City Airport is an international airport situated in the Royal Docks.

The area was heavily industrial and highly populated during WWII, according to CNN.

Since 10 pm UK time on Sunday, the airport has been closed and all flights have been cancelled, including 130 flights that were scheduled for Monday.

"The airport is cooperating fully with the [Metropolitan] Police, Royal Navy and London Borough of Newham," the airport added in its statement, noting that the bomb was in the process of being removed.

The Royal Navy, who were called in once the bomb was discovered, carried out a 214-metre exclusion zone to "ensure that the ordnance can be safely dealt with whilst limiting any risk to the public," the Metropolitan Police said in a separate statement.

"All flights today are cancelled but some airlines have moved their flights to other airports - CityJet to Southend and Alitalia to Stansted,” the BBC reported on Monday, citing a statement by the airport said.

No official date as to when the London City Airport will be reopened has been announced.
