A $60 female-founded app goes viral globally

Mubasher: A new all-female-founded app has taken the app stores by storm.

The GirlCrew platform, which was founded by three Irish girls, who decided to start their own business, with meagre amount of money, has attracted thousands of members from all around the world.

Pamela Newenham, Aine Mulloy, and Elva Carri said they created a social platform that enables women to network within their local area through either texting in online group chats or planning for offline events.

"We didn't have to pay for office space, as the work we did was mainly from the living room of my apartment," GirlCrew’s founder and co-CEO Pamela Newenham told CNBC.

The platform, which began its first year at only $60 in investments, now has more than 100,000 users from over 45 cities including New York, Toronto, and Melbourne.

"We all kept our full-time jobs and worked on GirlCrew part-time, trying out various revenue streams," Newenham added.

The three women revealed that they had to acquire some technical skills on their own before setting up their platform, citing that the majority of the $60 was spent on content creation.

"We needed help with funny content, that would be shared widely, and drive people to the GirlCrew site," Newenham said.

However, the co-CEO further recommended hiring a technology advisor for newly-founded startups, noting that the trio struggled to outsource the development of their app.

As for future expansion plans, GirlCrew co-CEO Newenham noted that they hoped that the app would attract more people over the next few years and perhaps one day list their company in the stock exchange.
