German parliament elects Merkel for 4th term

Mubasher: Germany’s lawmakers on Wednesday has elected Angela Merkel as Chancellor for the fourth consecutive term, ending a long period of political uncertainty in the Eurozone’s largest economy.

Parliament members voted 364-315 in Merkel’s favour, almost six months after the national elections saw a significant growth in far-right popularity with the Alternative for Germany party winning around 12.5% of votes.

The German chancellor won 364 out of 709 votes during the first round, 11 votes more than required to form the majority but 35 less than if all the members of her coming governing coalition elected her.

“I accept the vote,” Merkel told the Bundestag after the vote.

The German leader would head a totally different new cabinet, with the ruling parties seeking a significant change after September elections.

“A clear vote and a smooth start. Now full steam ahead for Germany,” the new general secretary of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer posted on Twitter.
