German economic confidence falls sharply in March

Mubasher: Germany’s economic sentiment worsened more than expected in March, reflecting concerns over the Eurozone’s largest economy’s activity.

ZEW research institute’s economic sentiment index fell to 5.1 points during this month, compared with 17.8 points in January, data on Tuesday showed.

Economists had expected a slighter decline to around 13 points in March.

Meanwhile, the indicator of current economic situation decreased by 1.6 points to 90.7 points this month.

“Concerns over a US-led global trade conflict have made the experts more cautious in their prognoses. The strong euro is also hampering the economic outlook for Germany, a nation reliant on exports,” ZEW President Achim Wambach said.

By 10:17 am GMT, the EUR/USD pair slipped by around 0.2% to $1.2310.
