Toy maker Hasbro to buy entertainment brands for $522m

Mubasher: US-based Hasbro on Tuesday announced that it will acquire entertainment brands from Saban Properties.

The American toy maker will purchase entertainment brands, including characters from the TV series Power Rangers and My Pet Monster, in a cash-and stock deal of $522 million.

“We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire brand blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint," Hasbro’s CEO Brian Goldner said in a statement.

The transaction is part of Hasbro's efforts to reverse its losses following the last-year bankruptcy of US toy retailer Toys R Us.

Earlier this year, Hasbro and Saban inked a deal for the toy maker to design, produce and bring to market a slew of toys and role-play items inspired by Power Rangers, Reuters reported.

Hasbro, the world’s largest toy maker whose stable of franchises includes “My Little Pony,” “Monopoly” and “The Transformers”, has taken several steps in an attempt to bolster its presence in the entertainment business as a way to fuel toy sales.

Since the beginning of the year, Hasbro's shares have levelled down 3.1%.
