Airbus nears $29bn deals with Asian carriers

Mubasher: European carrier Airbus is said to be close to $29 billion in deals with several Asian carriers.

The deals come as part of a fleet expansion process as Airbus seeks to meet growing regional demand, informed but unnamed sources told Bloomberg on Monday.

The European aircraft maker is working on a $23 billion sale to AirAsia Group Bhd., the continent’s largest budget carrier, the sources told the news agency.

Airbus also working on a separate deal worth $6 billion to sell wide-body jetliners to Taiwanese startup StarLux Airlines, one of the people said.

“The deals are based on list prices and discounts are customary for bulk orders,” the news agency added.

Although no official deal has been made, talks are close their final stages, the sources said, noting that part of the deals may be announced during the Farnborough Air Show which kicks off Monday outside London.

“The Malaysian airline, already the second-biggest customer for Airbus’s re-engined A320 narrowbody, is weighing an order for as many as 100 A321neo aircraft, according to people familiar with the discussions. AirAsia is simultaneously close to agreeing to order an additional 34 A330neo widebodies, which would bring its total backlog for that aircraft to 100,” Bloomberg said in its report.

The UK airshow, the aviation sector’s largest expo, ends Sunday, 22 July.
