UK new fighter jet model to replace Typhoon

Mubasher: The UK on Monday unveiled a new fighter jet model during the Farnborough Air Show held outside London.

UK defence secretary Gavin Williamson commented that the new jet model, named Tempest, could be used with pilots or as a drone, adding that the UK was investing GBP 2 billion in the jet.

Tempest will be developed and built by BAE Systems, engine maker Rolls-Royce, and Italy's Leonardo.

The top defence official hopes the jet would start flying by 2035. It is expected that Tempest will replace the existing Typhoon fighter jet.

"We have been a world leader in the combat air sector for a century, with an enviable array of skills and technology, and this strategy makes clear that we are determined to make sure it stays that way," Williamson said.

The Farnborough Air Show runs from 16 to 22 July.
