US Booking.com invests $500m in China's Didi

Mubasher: Online travel agency Booking Holdings on Tuesday announced a $500 million investment in the Chinese ride-sharing application DiDi Chuxing, within a wider strategic partnership.

As part of the deal, the US online travel leader, which changed its name from Priceline Group earlier this year, would enable users of its applications to hail DiDi rides, both companies said in a joint statement, without disclosing further details.

DiDi users would also be able to use Booking Holdings’ services, like booking hotels through Booking.com or Agoda, they added.

The investment comes at the time when DiDi is expanding widely into several overseas markets, competing with US ride-sharing giant Uber.

The Chinese startup also launched businesses in Mexico, Australia and Japan, while it invested in a number of Uber’s rivals such as Indian Ola, Singapore-based Grab and US on-demand transport firm Lyft.
