Emirates backtracks on launching Dubai-Spain-Mexico route
Emirates’ decision came after the Mexican authorities decided to allow the airline to launch only 3 flights a week

Dubai – Mubasher: Emirates on Monday announced that it has scrapped plans to operate flights from the emirate of Dubai to Mexico through an intermediate stop in Spain.

The Dubai government-owned carrier’s decision came after the Mexican authorities decided to allow the airline to launch only three flights per week, Emirates’ spokesperson told Arabian Business.

The spokesperson said that three weekly flights “is not commercially viable” for Emirates in view of the investment required for this long distance operation, along with the negative impact on connectivity and convenience for our passengers.

In May, Aeromexico’s CEO Andres Conesa said Mexico’s largest airline was considering ways to legally ban Emirates from launching any “fifth freedom” flights to Mexico through a third country, citing that such a flight would pose a danger to Mexican jobs.

In the same vein, Aeromexico said it was cancelling plans for its own Barcelona-Mexico flights, citing the “unfair” approval of a fifth freedom flight for Emirates by Spanish authorities in March.
