Dubai – Mubasher: A delegation from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China’s Huawei.

The MoU comes in line with the Smart Dubai initiative launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE vice president and Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, to make the emirate “the happiest and smartest city in the world,” DEWA said in a statement.

The signing came during a visit by a DEWA delegation headed by DEWA’s managing director and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer.

The purpose of the visit was to enhance mutual cooperation and share best practices and experiences in the fields of innovation, disruptive technologies, smart networks, digital transformation, automation, cloud platforms, and artificial intelligence (AI) between the two entities.

Al Tayer signed the MoU with Huawei’s rotating chairman Guo Ping, aiming to establish a partnership and achieve strategic objectives for both parties, including “the co-creation of digital services, co-marketing of digital products in the UAE and around the world, and the co-sharing of the value created from these businesses enabled services.”

Accompanying Al Tayer were DEWA’s executive vice president (VP) of Innovation and the Future Marwan Bin Haidar; DEWA’s executive VP of business development and excellence Waleed Salman; and DEWA’s executive VP of business support and HR Dr. Yousef Al Akraf.

Under the deal, a joint research and development team will be established “for new initiatives, including the development of an advanced networking infrastructure backbone and access, and of a network self-healing mechanism. It also includes Internet of Things (IoT) technology, cloud services that comprise cloud solutions and pre-fab data centre facilities, smart city initiatives, digital services, and AI,” the statement explained.
