Britain’s green energy capacity tops other power sources

Mubasher: Green energy that is connected to Britain’s electricity grid has jumped to a record 42 gigawatts (GW) in the third quarter of 2018, data released on Tuesday showed.

Following this rise, Britain now has more renewable energy capacity than any other power source, a report commissioned by Drax Group Plc said, indicating that the country’s renewables have surpassed the “dash-for-gas” move from the 1990s.

Britain adds around 3.8 GW of green energy per year compared to 2.4 GW of natural gas, the report explained.

Meanwhile, fossil fuel capacity has dwindled especially after several old power stations were closed, Drax Group said, noting that about 25% of Britain’s coal-fired energy output closed in 2017, leaving only six generators operational in the country.
