Ford, Walmart partner to design driverless vehicle delivery service

Mubasher: Ford would team up with Walmart and online delivery service Postmates to test a service for delivering goods like groceries that could use driverless vehicles in the future.

The Walmart pilot project, focused in Florida’s Miami-Dade County, would initially use human-driven vehicles to simulate how an autonomous vehicle would behave, Ford said.

The auto manufacturer said it expected to launch commercial production of self-driving vehicles by 2021.

The project would offer customers delivery by Postmates of goods ordered at Walmart stores.

The companies would work over the next “couple of months” to determine the goods that can be delivered successfully, especially perishable groceries, Ford autonomous vehicle unit executive Brian Wolf wrote in a blog post.

“Before self-driving cars can go mainstream, we must get a better sense of how people want to interact with them,” Walmart’s digital operations senior vice president Tom Ward said.

The project is Ford’s latest in its broader effort to develop businesses that could employ autonomous delivery vehicles.

Ford is also conducting a similar test with pizza giant Domino’s in Miami.
