UK Brexit minister, 3 others quit over draft divorce deal

Mubasher: Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab resigned along with three other ministers over UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s handling of Brexit, sending the pound tumbling.

“I cannot in good conscience support the terms proposed for our deal with [the European Union],” secretary Raab said on Twitter.

Raab took office in the summer after the resignation of David Davis in protest to Premier May’s withdrawal plan.

Shortly after Raab’s departure, Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey also resigned, citing that the Brexit deal “does not honour the result of the referendum.”

This came hours after Shailesh Vara resigned from his position as minister of state for Northern Ireland, saying that May's deal “leaves the UK in a halfway house with no time limit on when we will finally be a sovereign nation.”

Moreover, Suella Braverman, a junior minister in the UK’s Brexit ministry, as she was “unable to sincerely support the deal agreed yesterday by the cabinet.

In reaction to Raab’s resignation, the sterling pound dropped 1.45% against the US dollar to $1.2799 at 10:13 am GMT.

By 11:29 am GMT, the GBP/USD pair plunged 1.62% to $1.2782.
