7 killed, dozens injured in Turkey train collision

Mubasher: Seven people were killed and 46 others were injured in Turkey, after a high-speed train collided with another rail engine, crashing into a pedestrian overpass at Ankara train station on Thursday.

Governor of Ankara Vasip Sahin initially confirmed that four people were killed in the accident, and later on, his office stated that seven people were killed, including the train’s engine driver, while three passengers were critically injured.

“Our hope is that there are no other victims,” Sahin said.

The collision happened in Marsandiz station, around 6:30 am local time, as the train was heading to the central Turkish province of Konya from Ankara, news reports said.

The crash happened as the high-speed train hit the engine which was checking the tracks at the station, Sahin told reporters.

Video footage showed rescue workers, freeing people from carriages, stuck beneath the metal wreckage of the overpass at the train station.

At least two cars derailed, while parts of the overpass collapsed on to the train, private NTV television said.
