Apple plans to establish $1bn campus in Texas

Mubasher: Apple on Thursday said that it would invest $1 billion to build a new campus in Texas, with another $10 billion for new data centres.

The new 133-acre campus in North Austin, Texas would be located less than a mile away from Apple’s existing facilities, and would accommodate an initial 5,000 employees, with a total capacity for 15,000 employees, the tech titan said.

Apple’s newest data centres would be located in Waukee, Iowa, while the data centres in North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada are under the process of expansion, it added.

Such plans came within the framework of a five-year investment aimed at creating 20,000 jobs in the US.

Apple would also establish new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, California, adding 1,000 employees, while it would expand its existing business in Pittsburgh, New York and Boulder Colorado over the coming three years, the tech titan said.

The iPhone maker faced increasing political pressure to step up its domestic investments since 2016, when then presidential candidate Donald Trump took aim at the company for utilising plants in Asia for the bulk of its manufacturing.
