US weekly jobless claims drop 27,000 in early December

Mubasher: US unemployment claims dropped 27,000 week-on-week to 206,000 claims in the week ended 8 December, data released on Thursday showed.

The more stable monthly average of claims went down 3,750 to 224,750 from the previous week's upwardly revised average of 228,500, the US Department of Labor said.

The initial seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate for the week ended 1 December came in at 1.2%, edging up 0.1% from the previous week’s unrevised rate.

The advance seasonally adjusted figure for the insured jobless individuals in the US rose 25,000 to 1.661 million during the week ended 1 December, compared to the preceding week’s upwardly revised 1.636 million.

The advance unadjusted number of actual initial claims filed under state programmes reached a total of 260,508  in the week ended 8 December, falling by 57,427 claims or 18.1% from the claims filed in the previous week, while initial claims reached 282,009 in the comparable week last year.

By 1:30 pm GMT, the index went up 0.11% to 97.1530.
