May’s gov’t survives no-confidence motion

Mubasher: UK Prime Minister Theresa May narrowly survived a no-confidence vote, triggered by the overwhelming defeat of her Brexit plan before the country exits the European Union (EU).

Premier May on Wednesday won 325 to 306, with the support of her Conservative Party and Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in the final count.

May is set to meet with other parties to forge together a Brexit “Plan B,” which is due to be presented before the Parliament by next Monday.

The UK prime minister invited party leaders, who advocated closer relations with the EU, for holding discussions to hammer out a compromise Brexit plan that can win the approval of the parliament.

“The government approaches these meetings in a constructive spirit, and I urge others to do the same,” May told lawmakers, adding that “we must find solutions that are negotiable and command sufficient support in this House.”

However, opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said that the premier should rule out a no-deal Brexit as a precondition to engage in these discussions.

The parliament on Tuesday rejected the Brexit terms reached by May with the EU leaders, by a margin of 230 votes.

Corbyn called then for the no-vote confidence, which required members of the House of Commons to decide whether it backs May’s government, in a bid to initiate general elections.

London and Brussels need to agree on and ratify a deal before 29 March when The UK would leave the EU, to avoid catastrophic economic and political consequences.
