German business morale improves in January

Mubasher: German economic confidence saw an improvement in January, survey data showed on Tuesday.

Indicator for economic sentiment for Germany climbed to -15 in January from -17.5 in December 2018, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) reported.

However, the separate index gauging investors’ assessment of the current conditions in German economy, dropped to 27.6 points in January compared with 45.3 in the previous month.

The index drop was the biggest in four years, indicating worries over the health of the German economy.

Recent data revealed that Europe’s largest economy almost avoided declining into recession at the end of last years, amidst global trade disputes, Brexit negotiations, and the impact of the diesel emissions issues on its auto industry.

By 10:28 am GMT, the EUR/USD pair went down 0.02% to $1.1363.
