Renault boss Carlos Ghosn quits

Mubasher: Jailed Renault head Carlos Ghosn stepped down as the auto giant’s chairman and CEO late Wednesday, news reports said on Thursday.

“Carlos Ghosn just resigned last night,” French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire told Bloomberg at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Sources from the car manufacturer confirmed the move later on, according to German news agency DPA.

Ghosn is set to be replaced as a chairman by Michelin’s boss Jean-Dominique Senard, and as CEO by Thierry Bollore, currently holding the position on an interim basis, according to Bloomberg.

The French carmaker’s supervisory board is set to meet later in the day to decide his successor.

64-year-old Ghosn’s removal was expected after Le Maire demanded his resignation, as the French government owns a 15% stake in Renault.

Before his detention last November, Ghosn served as a top executive at the alliance of Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Ghosn’s resignation from Renault may ease tensions that emerged between Renault and Nissan after his arrest in Japan for alleged financial misconduct.

Japanese authorities charged Ghosn of under-reporting his salary at Nissan by 5 billion Japanese yen (JPY) ($44 million) between 2011 and 2015.

Nissan and Mitsubishi ousted him as chairman shortly after his arrest.
