US VP urges EU allies to exit Iran accord

Mubasher: The Trump administration on Thursday urged the US traditional allies in Europe to quit the landmark 2015 nuclear accord with Iran.

“The time has come for our European partners to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and join with us as we bring the economic and diplomatic pressure necessary to give the Iranian people, the region and the world the peace security and freedom they deserve,” US Vice President Mike Pence said in a Middle East conference in Poland.

Vice President Pence also lashed out at the UK, France and Germany and the European Union (EU) as a whole for staying parties to the nuclear agreement with Iran from which President Donald Trump withdrew last year, reinstating sanctions against Tehran.

“Sadly, some of our leading European partners have not been nearly as cooperative,” Pence said, adding that “they have led the effort to create mechanisms to break up our sanctions.”

Pence specifically criticised the three nations for announcing last month a new financial mechanism which the White House believes that it aims to keep the nuclear deal alive and circumvent sanctions.

The mechanism, also known as the “special purpose vehicle,” represented “an effort to break American sanctions against Iran’s murderous regime,” the vice president said.

“It's an ill-advised step that that will only strengthen Iran, weaken the EU, and create still more distance between Europe and the US,” Pence warned.

Pence also lauded other countries for falling in line with the sanctions by slashing their crude oil purchases from Iran.
